Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) infections have been observed on fourteen ornamental and five vegetable species in Greece. Several indicator plants showed typical TSWV symptoms after mechanical inoculation with all samples collected. The host range of two tomato (TTHand TCR) and one groundnut (GRKL isolates is similar to that reported for TSWV. In enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the samples reacted with polyclonal antibodies (PAb) raised against the nucleocapsid (N) protein of TSWV although absorbance values varied considerably. The western flower thrip (Frankliniella occidentalis) was isolated from most vegetables and ornamentals; whereas, Thrips tabaci was the only thrips species present on groundnuts. The Greek isolates were all identified as TSWV on the basis of biological and serological tests. |
