Data are presented for field and laboratory experiments carried out to estimate the loss of fruitsetting in olives, attributed to the heteropterous bug Calocoris trivialis (Costa), a species listed as a pest of olives in the literature. Adults and larvae may pierce citrus and olive flowers which do not then develop further. However, larval development and reproduction of the insect were shown to occur in the undergrowth of olive orchards only. Field experiments revealed no difference in fruitsetting on branches protected from the bug and exposed branches. It is concluded that early flowershed in olives cannot be attributed to C. trivialis, and therefore C. trivialis cannot be regarded as a pest of olives. |
