heal.abstract | Windbreaks may be designed to offer additional protection to greenhouses along their side walls against excessive wind loads, while reducing heat losses. Recently, windbreaks made of agricultural plastic nets are replacing the traditional ones consisted of trees. The present work aims at optimising the design and use of net-covered windbreaks for the protection of greenhouses by analysing the airflow around a combined system of a net-covered windbreak and an arch-roof plastic greenhouse of typical geometric characteristics. The effect of the height of the windbreak and its distance from the sidewall of the greenhouse on the wind pressure coefficient was investigated for three different net types by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. An optimal design for a protecting windbreak was proposed for the studied greenhouse as an example of the proposed design methodology. | en |
