The aim of this paper is to investigate, using simulation, the feasibility of monitoring the condition of an electrically driven mechanical load by measurement of electrical quantities (i.e., voltage, current) within the variable-speed drive system. The work involves the implementation of an inverter-fed induction motor model as well as the implementation of a suitable mechanical load to simulate load changes. For the simulation of the drive model used in this work, the PSCAD/EMTDC software package was used, and Fourier analysis of the inverter phase current was employed to detect any harmonics induced on the current as a result of the mechanical load variation.
