A new general fast method (as fast as a titration) for converting 2H-furfuryl alcohols to 2H-pyran-3(6H)-ones by the use of NBS as an oxidant is presented. NBS oxidizes selectively the furfuryl alcohols without affecting thioether substituents. © 1986 American Chemical Society. |
