heal.abstract | This study analyzes the impacts of economic and noneconomic factors on the U.S. import demand for canola oil. Monthly data from January 1989 through December 1995 were used in the analysis. Imports were specified as a function of own import price, prices of substitute edible vegetable oils, the Canadian-U.S. dollar exchange rate, disposable personal income, changes in consumer tastes and preferences, and a dummy variable reflecting trade liberalization. Canola imports were significantly affected by own price, exchange rate, soybean oil price, trade liberalization, and a shift in consumer preference for healthy oils. © 1998 by The Haworth Press, Inc.
