The present paper deals with the analysis of the behaviour and performance of a reformulated four-node shell element with special emphasis placed on the analysis of the load carrying mechanisms developed by shell structures. The flexural behaviour of the reformulated C0 shell element is shown to be influenced critically by the activation of the moment redistribution mechanism of the shell model. This mechanism may be triggered by the in-plane twisting stiffness of the shell element through the tangential edge shear strain components of the model. Triggering of the moment redistribution mechanism is dominated, however, by the flexural membrane action and/or an equivalent elastic foundation action of the shell model, through the membrane strain components of the shell element. This behaviour allows for a systematic analysis of the load carrying mechanisms by the finite element model. The performance of the reformulated C0 four-node shell element in analysing the load carrying mechanisms developed by shell structures is illustrated in the present paper with the Scordelis-Lo roof shell system. © 1997 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Science Ltd. |
